Piazza Grande e Palazzo dei Consoli, Gubbio Nel 1321 gli eugubini decidono di costruire due nuovi palazzi pubblici in sostituzione dell'antica residenza comunale. Per il complesso viene scelto un luogo centrale della città, in modo che i palazzi risultassero tangenti a tutti i quartieri (S. Andrea, S. Giuliano, S. Martino, S. Pietro). Sin dall'origine è prevista una grande piazza pensile tra il Palazzo dei Consoli e quello del Podestà. L'immane sforzo costruttivo, iniziato sotto la direzione dell'architetto Angelo da Orvieto, si protrae fino alla metà del ?300. Le vicende politiche che travagliano Gubbio dal 1350 al 1384 impediscono di terminare l'impegnativo progetto. Solo alla fine del secolo successivo viene completata la piazza. Nel sec. XVI è costruito un loggiato nel lato verso valle di Piazza Grande, abbattuto poi nel 1839 mentre nel lato opposto si erigeva il neoclassico Palazzo Ranghiasci.
