Fenicotteri nelle saline di Macchiareddu-Assemini Il fenicottero rosa è particolarmente diffuso lungo il bacino del Mediterraneo, nell'Asia sud-occidentale e in Africa. L'insediamento nelle zone lacustri sarde risale agli anni '90, con l'arrivo di nuove colonie nello stagno di Molentargius. Da qui un numero cospicuo di esemplari si è poi trasferito per lo svernamento e la nidificazione nel vicino e più tranquillo stagno di Santa Gilla. Il fenicottero è una specie inconfondibile, lunga 1,30 m, con un'apertura alare di circa 140 cm. ed un peso variabile tra i 2 ed i 4 kg. Si tratta di un trampoliere rosato con collo e zampe lunghissimi e il becco incurvato; la colorazione del becco è rosa con la punta nera mentre le zampe sono rosate e palmate. La colorazione delle ali è rossa in netto contrasto con le remiganti nere, mentre il restante piumaggio è bianco.
