La parola Burren deriva dall'antica lingua irlandese, il gaelico, e significa "terra di rocce". Questa regione si compone di pietra arenaria, ruvida e friabile, nota come "carso". La superficie della pietra si frattura in canali stretti e profondi ( grykes ), larghi solo alcuni centimetri ma lunghi dei metri, inframmezzati da rocce di forma oblunga ( note come clint ) di varie dimensioni. All'occhio inesperto appare come una terra simile al pietrisco per nulla feconda.
