Il Fraticello (Sterna albifrons cm 23) è la più piccola sterna europea, sicuramente più veloce e guizzante delle eleganti ed aggraziate cugine più grandi. Se confrontato con loro, i fraticelli sembrano ingranaggi di un orologio; quando si tuffano per pescare, colpiscono l'acqua (ripetutamente e in modo concitato) lanciando un piccolo schizzo, ma raramente con sufficiente forza per immergersi. A volte si tuffano dopo aver assunto la figura cosiddetta dello "spirito santo" per meglio avvistare il pesce. Ha la fronte bianca in tutti i piumaggi, il becco nero con la punta gialla (primavera, estate) e le zampe gialle (sempre). La coda è corta, il volo è veloce con colpi d'ala rapidi (ricorda il corriere grosso), molto sfarfallato quando esplora la superficie dell'acqua. Il giovane è riconoscibile innanzi tutto per la taglia. Sono uccelli molto attivi e rumorosi; voce, un aspro e acuto prit-prit. Nidifica all'estremità delle onde sulle spiagge, sia sabbiose e sia ciottolate (anche acque interne), al suolo, in buchette che i fraticelli scavano premendo il petto sulla sabbia e ruotando su se stessi per ottenere una piccola depressione a scodella. Le loro uova possono essere spazzate via da una mareggiata data la vicinanza del mare. La presenza minacciosa dei gabbiani reali, pronti a predare le uova, o quella di un falco vicino, possono mettere in allarme la colonia di fraticelli, che insorge compatta contro l'intruso. Le persone, attraversando la zona dove essi nidificano, possono calpestare le uova anche involontariamente, dato il loro confondersi col terreno. Talora anche coloro che praticano il motocross lungo le spiagge possono danneggiare irreparabilmente molti nidi. Spesso gli stessi bagnanti, che si installano vicino alla colonia di fraticelli, possono impedire ai genitori di covare o di proteggere i neonati per ore dai raggi cocenti del sole, con conseguenze disastrose per la nidiata. Nonostante il disturbo che gli umani di frequente arrecano loro, questi uccelli ritornano ogni anno dall'Africa sulle nostre spiagge per nidificare. In autunno si spostano a sud, andando in Africa in inverno. Depongono 1/3 uova che, come i nidiacei, si mimetizzano bene col fondo sabbioso del litorale. Le uova si schiudono dopo 18/22 giorni e il piccolo vola 19/20 giorni dopo.
