A cavallo tra le costellazioni del Cane Maggiore e dell'Unicorno, ben visibili verso sud in queste sere di gennaio, si trova la estesa nebulosa Ic 2177, meglio nota come?nebulosa Gabbiano. Incredibile la somiglianza di questa struttura cosmica con l'uccello marino. Dalla nostra prospettiva abbiamo anche una stella in primo piano situata in corrispondenza dell'occhio Questa nube di gas e polveri si estende per circa 100 anni luce e si trova a 3700 anni luce dalla Terra. La nebulosa è una regione dove si stanno formando nuove stelle ed è proprio la radiazione emessa dalle stelle giovani che fa risplendere l'idrogeno gassoso presente nella nube di un rosso intenso.
