Il lago di Baratz si trova nel territorio del comune di Sassari, a soli 30 minuti dalla città, e circa 20-25 minuti da Alghero. Oltre ad avere una lunga storia, essendo la zona già popolata nell'Ottocento, il lago di Baratz è sempre stato noto per la sua affascinante leggenda. Situato vicino a Porto Ferro e alla borgata di Baratz, nei pressi della frazione di Villa Assunta e di Santa Maria La Palma, il lago si è formato a seguito dello sbarramento, da parte di una duna sabbiosa, delle valli fluviali dell'attuale rio dei Giunchi e del rio proveniente da Cuili Puddighinu. Una delle sue particolarità è che, pur essendo privo di emissari, la profondità del lago non cresce oltre il livello attuale, questo accade a causa della permeabilità della duna sabbiosa. Nel corso degli anni infatti, la profondità del lago è variata notevolmente, passando dai livelli massimi di 14 metri negli anni 60, fino a ridursi drasticamente al minimo storico di 5 metri negli anni 70. Il livello di profondità attuale del lago di Baratz è di circa 6,5 metri. Un'altra particolarità sta nel fatto che oltre ad essere l'unico lago naturale della Sardegna, il lago di Baratz è anche un sito di importanza comunitaria (SIC). In seguito ad una bonifica agraria della zona e all'abbassamento del livello del lago nel corso degli anni, dalle sue acque riemerse un vero e proprio arsenale della seconda guerra mondiale, rimasto nascosto fino a metà degli anni 90. Nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale l'esercito tedesco utilizzo la zona per posizionare alcune basi. Quando venne ordinata la ritirata, le truppe non potendo trasportare tutto l'apparato bellico, tra cui anche numerose bombe, decisero di gettare tutto nel lago. La profondità delle acque nascose per molti anni questo pericoloso segreto, fino a metà degli anni novanta, quando il livello non iniziò a scendere, facendo riemergere diversi ordigni, alcuni esplosi e altri inesplosi. Venne quindi disposta una lunga e laboriosa opera di bonifica che condusse al recupero di centinaia di bombe di vario genere, un vero e proprio arsenale delle cui dimensioni nessuno aveva mai sospettato. La leggenda che da sempre accompagna il lago di Baratz, narra che in tempi lontani al posto del lago ci fosse una ricca e florida città chiamata Barax. L'esistenza della città di Barax sembrerebbe essere confermata da alcune antiche carte custodite in un luogo imprecisato. Secondo la leggenda, Barax era considerato un luogo di perdizione, abitato da persone molto avide e lussuriose. Per questo la città di Barax subì il castigo divino. Si narra infatti che proprio Dio in persona comparve a una giovane donna del posto, sotto le mentite spoglie di un viandante, e la esortò ad abbandonare la città di gran fretta con una sola raccomandazione: non si sarebbe dovuta mai voltare, per nessuna ragione al mondo. La giovane obbedì e nella direzione opposta della città , finché non udì alle sue spalle un fortissimo boato. A quel punto si voltò, e vide l'intera città che veniva risucchiata nelle viscere della terra. Nello stesso istante in cui si guardò alle spalle, fu trasformata in roccia e venne anch'essa sommersa dall'acqua del lago che spunto dal nulla e invase tutta la zona. NotizieSarde.it
