CRACOVIA. Plac Bohateròw Getta (Piazza degli Eroi del Ghetto di Cracovia), durante l'occupazione nazista, è stata teatro di centinaia di esecuzioni di cittadini ebrei e punto di raccolta e di partenza di altre migliaia, verso i campi di concentramento. A ricordare quei tragici eventi, nella piazza che prima dell'occupazione nazista era un luogo di raduno, ora Luogo della Memoria, sono state collocate 70 sedie in metallo, opera di due artisti polacchi. Pare si fossero ispirati a una fotografia scattata in quei giorni a una bambina che stava trasportando la sedia, utilizzata a scuola, durante lo spostamento di massa degli ebrei dal quartiere di Kazimierz al Ghetto. Secondo un'altra versione invece ogni sedia rappresenterebbe 1000 ebrei che sono stati deportati. Il significato delle 70 sedie si sposa con una scena accaduta durante i giorni della deportazione: i nazisti liberavano le case abitate dagli ebrei lanciando fuori dalle finestre i mobili che si fracassavano nella piazza. Anche una sola sedia è indispensabile all'interno di una casa e indica quanto un oggetto così povero e “banale” possa significare tutto. Questa seconda versione è descritta nel libro "Una farmacia nel ghetto di Cracovia": tuttavia è anche possibile che una vicenda non escluda l'altra. Il Farmacista Tadeusz Pankiewicz, autore del libro, unico non ebreo del Ghetto era Polacco di religione cattolica e si rifiutò di spostarsi quando fu costituito il Ghetto. Continuò la sua attività nella Farmacia “Aquila”, insieme al suo personale, aiutando clandestinamente la popolazione ebraica, distribuendo medicinali e generi alimentari, nascondendo e mettendo in salvo i perseguitati dai nazisti. La farmacia si trova ancora in un angolo di Plac Bohateròw Getta e oggi ospita un museo con fotografie e reperti del periodo 1941-43.
