Il cuore di Lucerna sorge dove il fiume Reuss esce dal Vierwaldstättersee, dove l'ampia e docile massa lacustre d'improvviso si stringe, si comprime tra le membra cittadine e prende a ribollire, a schiumare, come se volesse dimostrare agli abitanti della città, dopo la placidità offerta ai piccoli villaggi affacciati sulle sponde del lago, di non aver perso nulla della sua originaria potenza, quella accumulata tra le rocce, le forre, i salti e le cascate del percorso alpino iniziale. E non è certamente un torrentello, la Reuss, ma anzi il suo ampio letto incide nettamente la geografia urbana lucernese, non certo così grande, appunto, diventandone presenza assolutamente primaria e viva, grazie ai tanti ponti pedonali che la scavalcano a pochi decimetri dalla superficie, avvicinandone così la massa d'acqua allo sguardo e all'impressione di abitanti e visitatori. Se piazzata in centro a Roma, insomma, ovvero a una città di milioni di abitanti, rappresenterebbe solo una minima parte del paesaggio urbano, ma qui è un elemento basilare e notevolmente vivificante.
