La Sacca degli Scardovari è uno dei paesaggi più riconoscibili e caratteristici del Delta del Po: un ampio bacino che si estende per diversi chilometri nell'entroterra, affacciato sul mare e interessato dalla presenza delle tipiche cavàne dei pescatori (case costruite e sospese sull'acqua tramite palificazioni). Racchiusa tra le foci del Po di Gnocca e del Po delle Tolle, la Sacca degli Scardovari è una laguna unica nel suo genere. Questa zona di passaggio tra l'acqua dolce ed il mare prende il suo nome dalla “scardova” o “scardola”, un pesce che nel '700 era molto presente in questa zona. Il termine “sacca”, invece, individua un'insenatura che comunica con il mare aperto attraverso una bocca lagunare. Qui, tra queste acque, nel 1780 si stanziò una piccola comunità di pescatori, che sfruttando le particolarità del territorio e in perfetto equilibrio con esso, si è dedicata alla pesca di pesci d'acqua dolce come principale fonte di profitto e sostentamento. Oggi le antiche palafitte, dette cavàne, che venivano utilizzate come abitazioni dai pescatori sono state sostituite da strutture più resistenti, utilizzate ancora adesso per riporre gli attrezzi per la pesca. La Sacca degli Scardovari, grazie a questa particolare idromorfologia, è un ambito lagunare che ben si presta all'acquacoltura: la prima cooperativa di pescatori risale già al 1936. Attualmente la produzione di cozze, vongole e ostriche provenienti da questa zona è una realtà consolidata
