Quest'area, oggi un quartiere di New Orleans, era un tempo parte di diverse piantagioni e fu venduta in lotti a ricchi americani che non volevano vivere nel quartiere francese con i creoli. Inizialmente parte della città di Lafayette (intorno al 1833), fu poi annessa a New Orleans nel 1852. Il quartiere e` stato progettato dall'architetto, pianificatore e geometra di New Orleans Barthelemy Lafon. In origine l'area era sviluppata con solo un paio di case per isolato, ognuna circondata da un grande giardino, da cui il nome del quartiere. Questi grandi lotti sono stati poi via via suddivisi, man mano che i quartieri alti di New Orleans diventavano più urbani. Oggi il "Garden District" e` noto per la sua architettura più che per i suoi Giardini.
