Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona. Le formazioni rocciose delle “Chiricahua Mountains” (Sud-Est Arizona) sono simili a quelle di “Bryce Canyon” (Utah) anche se di diverso colore. Sono il risultato di erosioni della pietra pomice e cenere compatta, prodotte da una grande eruzione intorno a 27 milioni di anni fa… Dal 1860 al 1880, le Chiricahua Mountains hanno dato rifugio alle tribu` Apache condotte dai famosi capi Cochise e Geronimo che hanno compiuto numerosi attacchi ai danni dei coloni bianchi che si erano stabiliti nella pianura circostante. Gli Apache vennero poi definitivamente sconfitti nel 1886, anche se i loro discendenti abitano tuttora le terre circostanti. La citta` piu` vicina per un'eventuale visita e` Willcox (sulla I-10), a circa 35 Miglia. (Dove da Matherlode, al 120 S Railroad Ave, la qualita` del caffe` espresso vi potra` sorprendere...)
