La foto è un crop di un Ghepardo (Acinonyx jubatus) ripreso nel Serengeti National Park, dicembre 2022. Il ghepardo è il più veloce mammifero terrestre, può raggiungere i 110 km orari e spiccare balzi di oltre 6 metri. La sua principale preda è la gazzella di Thomson, ma cattura anche altre antilopi di piccola e media taglia. Nell'ultimo secolo la popolazione di questo elegante felino si è ridotta del 90% e oggi, circa un terzo vive in Africa meridionale. L'ultima stima parla di soli 6.600 individui. ive nelle aree aperte di savana dove la sua tecnica di caccia può dare le migliori possibilità di successo. La sua strategia di predazione consiste in un lento avvicinamento tra l'erba e solo quando giunge ad una distanza di circa 70 metri si lancia all'inseguimento, che in genere non dura oltre i 300 metri. L'uccisione della preda avviene rapidamente per soffocamento con un morso alla gola, sia per evitare di restare ferito da un calcio della preda, sia per evitare l'arrivo di predatori come leoni, iene e leopardi che spessissimo sottraggono al ghepardo la preda uccisa ancora prima che possa iniziare a mangiare. La sua sagoma e il suo caratteristico mantello giallo con piccole e singole macchie nere, diverse da quelle 'composte' del leopardo, lo rende inconfondibile nella savana africana.
