Il mignattaio è visibile in tutti i continenti. In Italia esistono rare nidificazioni sulla Pianura padana, in ambienti con presenza di acqua. Una numereosa popolazione è osservabile presso la Riserva naturale orientata Biviere di Gela. Dal 1999 è tornato a nidificare il bacino del Lago di Chiusi nella bassa Val di Chiana in Toscana. Nel maggio del 2011 osservato un gruppo di 4 esemplari della specie Mignattaio sacro nelle risaie del Pavese, vicino a Vigevano.
