Attraversiamo anche noi il ponte per raggiungere il canale del mulino di Oleggio. Non sembra male per l'appostamento al martin pescatore; largo, tranquillo, in buona luce fin dal mattino presto anche nel mese di gennaio, quando la nebbia persistente tende a diradarsi soltanto per qualche momento all'alba, per ripresentarsi puntuale ai primi raggi di sole. Quest'anno si è aggiunto il gelo duraturo a complicare le cose. Gli uccelli, specialmente i più piccoli, sono stremati.. La femmina che si presenta è una tipa egocentrica e risoluta, e difende il suo territorio suon di fischi ed inseguimenti, e se non basta non ha alcun timore a passare alle vie di fatto. Quando sceglie un posatoio non è disposta a condividerlo con altri, nemmeno se quel qualcuno fosse il suo "promesso sposo". E' fortunata, la freccia alata, perché l'acqua nei canali artificiali non gela mai e qualche inetto pesciolino prima o poi finisce nel suo piatto! Questa poi, è particolarmente confidente e paffuta, perché può contare pure sui nostri rifornimenti, che hanno il fine di assuefarla alla nostra presenza. Venti pesciolini sono il risultato gastronomico di una sola mattina. Nessun dubbio un bel bottino! Qualcuno va sussurrando che di questo passo le prossime sue uova siano grandi almeno come quelle di una quaglia!
