E' metà ottobre e una pioggia, sottile e perdurante, avvolge i massi del Panperduto; l'umidità intensa penetra nella pelle e poi nelle ossa. Le giacche, ormai fradice, hanno esaurito la loro funzione, e l'unico ombrello è destinato a riparare la preziosa attrezzatura. Lungo il sentiero si incontra soltanto qualche irriducibile pescatore, con mantella impermeabile e stivaloni alla coscia, che saluta con un accenno di sorriso, guardandoci negli occhi. E' il Ticino vero, quello sconosciuto ai più, avulso dalle masse dai variopinti costumi che popolano i greti nelle afose giornate di luglio. Quando le piogge sono copiose la diga trattiene impressionanti quantitativi di acqua, che riverserà a valle sopra i grandi cubi di cemento collocati per spezzare l'impeto della corrente. Il veloce movimento crea curiosi effetti grafici, e le tonalità bianche e nere lasciano immaginare una pittura a carboncino. A monte della diga, accanto all'isola Confurto, nuota indisturbata una coppia di cigni reali, in compagnia di folaghe e cormorani. Anche loro, rigorosamente, bianchi e neri. Lo sguardo si sposta ancora, percorre attentamente tutta l'area di ripresa; un dettaglio è ancora assente per compiere lo scatto finale. Ma un intrepido quanto passeggero raggio di sole colpisce d'un tratto l'unico elemento di colore, che compare come d'incanto nella scena, lassù, sull'altra riva. Solo allora l'immagine è completa, e rivive nella realtà così come si era presentata nel nostro immaginario.
