L'alba è bellissima, il cielo terso, il freddo estremamente pungente. Il primo gennaio il mondo è diviso in due categorie di persone; quelle che riposano dopo la nottata festosa e quelle che ancora non si sono coricate. In lontananza risuona ancora qualche botto, scampato per puro caso alla gran festa di mezzanotte. A dire il vero c'è una terza categoria, quella degli incoscienti, che si è svegliata da poco e, ancora assonnata, cerca di raggiungere un particolare angolo di ripresa camminando precariamente sopra le insidiose massicciate coperte da un invisibile strato di ghiaccio rischiando, nella migliore delle ipotesi, un bagno fuori stagione Ma il freddo non basta a fermare l'immaginazione e d'improvviso si afferma forte la sensazione di un ritorno al passato, vent'anni prima. Il Ticino, lo stesso fiume, fu il vero attore del primo, sospirato "nostro" libro di fotografia. Così, di buon grado, sotto i nostri occhi passano in un baleno i vissuti di tanto tempo. Ecco allora apparire nel cielo la grande gru coronata che qualche tempo prima avevamo incontrato a Caltignaga, e poi il gruppo di lodolai, intento a cacciare di prima mattina chissà quale insetto, sfiorando il pelo dell'acqua sotto il ponte di Oleggio. Appare persino il maschio del falco cuculo, dall'elegante doppiopetto colore blu intenso, in transito verso l'Europa orientale, ma sempre più disposto ad accasarsi anche qui da noi. Il ricordo del piviere dorato è legato al suo nervoso girovagare nei prati di Bellinzago, prima di riprendere il suo volo verso la tundra artica, che lo aspetta come ogni anno. E poi compare la cicogna bianca e quella nera, il cigno selvatico, la sterna ed il fratino, e quella grossa femmina di pellegrino posata su una recinzione di Bernate. Alla fine però i piacevoli ricordi sono bruscamente interrotti da un lancinante dolore lombare, che ti riporta subito al presente, con una semplice consapevolezza, quella di avere vent'anni più di prima.
