Eccolo, il Fiume Azzurro. A Sesto Calende è sempre Ticino, ma con una nuovo abito, una diversa fisionomia; ha l'aspetto di un quarantenne, un po' appesantito ma deciso ad intraprendere un nuovo percorso, con l'esperienza e la determinazione che lo porterà, ora, a raccontare la "sua" storia. Adesso la corrente è lenta, e nel suo ampio letto si rispecchiano le ville di Castelletto Ticino, sulla sponda piemontese e le barche di pescatori, ricoperte da una lieve coltre bianca, frutto di una precoce e fugace nevicata novembrina, che alla luce del tramonto si è già dissolta lasciando intravedere soffusamente il colore dorato del sole. Immaginiamo di navigare verso valle, seduti su una di queste barche percorrendo il tratto fino alla panoramica piazza di Tornavento dove, nelle giornate ventose e nelle fredde mattinate invernali, si può ammirare buona parte della catena alpina. Ecco allora Golasecca, sulla sponda lombarda, che fu famosa per gli esperti barcaioli unici, si racconta, in grado di navigare il fiume nelle pericolose rapide. Poco più avanti Coarezza, e sul lato opposto Varallo Pombia. In questo tratto il fiume è molto mansueto, addomesticato dalle caratteristiche del territorio in cui scorre e dall'uomo che lo ha arginato, e reso fruibile per le sue attività. A valle della diga di Porto delle Torre il fiume acquista un aspetto decisamente più interessante sia sotto l'aspetto paesaggistico che dal punto di vista naturalistico. Compaiono i primi greti ciottolosi, e le sponde ripide, segno dell'azione erosiva delle acque in corrispondenza della grande ansa di Castelnovate, dove la direzione delle acque si inverte e prende a scorrere verso nord. Nel silenzio si percepisce il melodioso richiamo del gruccione, il fischio premonitore del passaggio della freccia alata, il martin pescatore e il chiacchiericcio delle colonie di topino, che nelle ripide pareti di sabbia instabile non faticano a trovare rifugio. Poi la sua corsa riacquista la direzione naturale, e il movimento delle acque riprende senza esitazione tutto il suo vigore e il suo entusiasmo.
