Lo si scorgeva fino ad un istante fa, ora è scomparso nel nulla. La nebbia bassa e persistente si prende gioco di tutti; si dirada per un attimo, poi si accumula sopra ogni cosa, portando con se' quel tipico odore che solo chi vive vicino al fiume è in grado di riconoscere, ancor prima che il biancore si espanda. Al confine tra Piemonte e Lombardia, la nebbia è così fitta che la si può "tagliare col coltello". Il vecchio ponte di ferro è come un fantasma che sotto il lenzuolo diffonde timore e curiosità. Sotto l'acqua scorre, da sempre. Le piene autunnali non lo preoccupano, le conosce, le sue fondamenta son saldamente ancorate al suolo, non esitano. In estate il ponte è meta dei vacanzieri, che vogliono provare l'appagante sensazione di immergere le caviglie nelle acque basse, fresche e sempre limpide. Nelle notti di luna la sua immagine spettrale si riflette nelle acque del Ticino che, in perenne movimento, trasformano la sua cornice in un'entità astratta, instabile. Migliaia di passeggeri lo attraversano ogni giorno, indifferenti, distaccati lo calpestano, non uno che si interessi alla sua immagine. I pescatori ed i raccoglitori di ciottoli lo rispettano, lo ammirano guadando col barcè, senza lasciare nessuna traccia: per loro è l'unico riferimento nelle giornate uggiose, le sue campate segnalano le secche del fiume, da evitare per non incagliarsi sul fondo. Lontano un incallito sognatore ammira in disparte quell'apparente ammasso di travi; prima o poi scoprira' una forma, che per un particolare gioco di luce, in un gelido albore invernale, incastonerà quel prodotto umano, come fosse una perla, nell'affascinante paesaggio che lo circonda.
