Excellent recovery of this beautiful subject, my favorite mantis on a par with the Empusa pennata :-D have you also tried a vertical shot?

I'll give a flask of beer to anyone who is able to recognize whether it is fasciata or pennata, both are the same, the difference seems to be a geography. Fasciata in Balcany, pennata Mediterranean countries.

Speaking about vertical shots, it was impossible. It wanted to sit only in such position you see on the picture.

Where did you take the photo?

Croatia, that's why I recognised the species as fasciata. But pennata is very similar, almost the same, basing on the other pictures taken for instance in Italy.

Yes, it's hard to distinguish them. The main difference should be that the lobe of the median coxa (the first segment of the median leg) is larger in E. fasciata; based on position and photo this one should be the E. fasciata

Not sure about it. Check those three pictures linked below. Two of them show Fasciata (mine) and third shows Pennata - dont see any difference on the legs ;) For me they are exactly the same.

Empusa pennata = small lobes

Empusa fasciata = big lobes

Ok, got it. Its about the lobes rather than legs itself. Missed that. Thanks.

Speaking about differencies between fasciata and pennata i assume both can be the same species. Sometimes the same species looks a bit different depending on the geography it lives in, but it is still the same one, even having some specific 'features' in different areas. As an example, a dragonfly below, both the same species, but differently looking on wings:
