La maclura pomifera è conosciuta anche come gelso del Texas o arancio degli Osagi. I suoi frutti sferici... qui visibili in fotografia... in realtà sono infruttescenze ed hanno un diametro di circa 13/15 centimetri. Sono molto pesanti e duri... e per quello che ho appreso... non hanno alcuna utilità se non quella decorativa. Invece i rami della pianta (vi sono maschi e femmine) sono abbastanza pregiati ed utuilizzati per lavorazioni in cui serve del legno resistente nel tempo. Essendo codesto legno anche elastico alcune tribù degli antichi nativi americani lo utilizzavano per costruire archi per lanciare frecce durante la caccia.
