Il castelliere di Noal, strategicamente rivolto verso la confluenza della Val Belluna con la valle del Cordevole , ci fornisce testimonianza delle modalità di difesa del territorio durante l'età del Bronzo Recente e Finale (XII-XI sec. a.C.), nell'età del Ferro (X-IX sec. a.C.) e successivamente in epoca medievale (X-XII sec. d.C.). Medievale era l'ultima costruzione: una struttura fortificata più complessa, costituita da una torre (alta circa 12/13 metri), una piccola guarnigione sopraelevata a difesa della porta d'accesso e una cinta muraria che serviva a proteggere le abitazioni e i laboratori artigianali presenti all'interno della stessa. Fu il vescovo Gerardo de' Taccoli, a capo degli eserciti congiunti di Belluno e Feltre, a distruggere definitivamente il "castello" nel 1196, sottraendolo così a Treviso, che nel frattempo lo aveva occupato, nel corso delle guerre che vollero il prelato contrapposto al Comune. Oggi il Castelliere di Noàl è un parco archeologico da studiare e valorizzare. Gli scavi, intrapresi fra il 1994 e il 1996 dalla Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Veneto, sono stati poi ripresi nel 2001. Gli scavi hanno confermato l'esistenza della fortificazione, ma pure che si lottò per il suo possesso (ritrovate punte di freccia, un pezzo di cotta, etc.). Gli scavi hanno inoltre rivelato la precedente esistenza, in età del Bronzo e del Ferro, di un castelliere (villaggio fortificato in altura) provvisto di palizzate su un terrapieno a difesa di piccole costruzioni adibite ad attività artigianali e ad abitazioni. Oggi si vede la torre di legno che ricorda quella in pietra distrutta nel 1196. Si rifà ad esempi dell'epoca ancora esistenti (una simile in Trentino).
