Il monaco Aba Haftermaryam posa davanti alla straordinaria chiesa di Abuna Aregawi, probabilmente la chiesa più antica del paese (X o XI secolo d.C.) e forse di tutta l'Africa. Si trova sulla vetta di una montagna dalla cima piatta, chiamata Debre Damo. Un ripido altopiano di forma trapezoidale di circa 1000x400 metri. Si trova ad un'altitudine di 2216 m sul livello del mare. I ripidi pendii per raggiungere il monastero rappresentano una delle esperienze più memorabili dell'Etiopia (almeno per gli uomini, visto che le donne non sono ammesse..). Per raggiungere il monastero, si deve scalare una parete a picco di 15 m. Ci si deve aggrappare ad un corda di cuoio mentre i monaci, dall'alto, ti aiutano a tirarti su con una seconda corda legata attorno al busto. Debre Damo si trova a nord-ovest di Adigrat, nella zona di Mehakelegnaw della regione del Tigray, vicino al confine con l'Eritrea.
