Pavia - la cupola del Duomo e sulla destra la guglia della chiesa di S. Maria del Carmine. La cupola a pianta ottagonale è alta, con la croce di sommità, 92 metri dal pavimento interno, che diventano 97 metri se si considera che la costruzione risulta leggermente rialzata rispetto al piano stradale. La diagonale maggiore della cupola è, esternamente, di 35,8 metri, mentre all'interno la diagonale massima misura 30 metri. Si ispira alla cupola del duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore a Firenze, di cui riprende la struttura composta da due calotte in muratura, l'interna con funzione strutturale e l'esterna, rivestita da lastre in piombo, con funzione di protezione alla prima. La cupola è sormontata da una slanciata lanterna che riprende il disegno del modello ligneo, e appoggia su un alto tamburo con ampi finestroni. La cupola è sorretta da otto pilastri dalla forma complessa, tra i maggiori della Lombardia per dimensioni, collegati da archi e costituiti da un nucleo di mattoni e da un paramento marmoreo. A causa dell'enorme peso della cupola (20.000 tonnellate), i pilastri hanno avuto bisogno di un recente e urgente intervento di consolidamento, avendo rischiato il collasso a causa di uno stato di flessione. Altri interventi sono stati necessari al tamburo insolitamente alto che presentava fessure, probabilmente già presenti fin dal disarmo. (fonte Wikipedia)
