"Arbeit Macht Frei" (in tedesco Il lavoro rende liberi) era il motto posto all'ingresso di numerosi lager prima e durante la seconda guerra mondiale. La scritta assunse nel tempo un forte significato simbolico, sintetizzando in modo beffardo le menzogne dei campi di concentramento, nei quali i lavori forzati, la condizione disumana di privazione dei prigionieri e solitamente il destino finale di morte, contrastavano con il significato opposto del motto stesso. Il campo di concentramento di Dachau fu il primo campo di concentramento nazista, aperto il 22 marzo 1933 su iniziativa di Heinrich Himmler. Iniziò così per Dachau un periodo drammatico che vide legato indissolubilmente il nome della città al campo di concentramento. Dachau servì da modello a tutti i campi di concentramento, di lavoro forzato e di sterminio nazisti eretti successivamente e fu la scuola d'omicidio delle SS che esportarono negli altri lager "lo spirito di Dachau, il terrore senza pietà." Nel campo transitarono circa 200.000 persone e 41.500 vi persero la vita. I deportati in arrivo dovevano percorrere una larga strada curata, la Lagerstrasse, al termine della quale era situato il cosiddetto Jourhaus, la "porta dell'inferno", il simmetrico edificio del comando di campo con una posticcia torretta di guardia sul tetto. Lo Jourhaus è attraversato nel mezzo da un grande arco d'ingresso al campo, completamente chiuso, a sua volta, da un esteso cancello in ferro battuto a due ante; al centro di esso un altro cancello più piccolo che reca la scritta: Arbeit macht frei. Con gli anni questo cinico slogan di Dachau, che significa "Il lavoro rende liberi", venne poi utilizzato in numerosi altri nuovi campi che via via si andavano costruendo, diventando il simbolo stesso della menzogna nazista sui lager. Il lavoro in quei luoghi infatti non liberò mai nessuno ma fu anzi usato come strumento di morte primario per il genocidio scientifico degli "indesiderabili", ritenuto vantaggioso per l'economia del Reich.
