Even in the Masino Bath Forest, which I frequent often, the rotting trunks are left just to preserve the habitat of rosalia Alpina!

Great Lookaloopy. By now according to the latest regulations, maintaining rotten wood is necessary to preserve the habitat. Many of the forest disasters in recent years are also due to this lack of dead wood that also strengthens the soil, being vital to the roots of the trees and the underground network of fungi useful to strengthen the underground

I agree Sigismondi. Very true, the road is long, but it seems to be the right one too. Here in the south it has been a few years since the right approach was taken and slowly by some result.

SPLENDIDA this photo, a masterpiece of "artistic galleries" created by these precious insects.
Conchord on the importance of leaving fallen logs to increase the quality of biodiversity.
Toot entire forests in the North East were crushed by Storm Vaia, the logs are still on the ground after more than 2 years, the ecosystem in this case has been completely overwhelmed. It will take many decades before the forest can be reborn! :-(

NadiaB thank you for your passage. I agree with your analysis. Seeing those spruce forests destroyed literally destroyed my heart

Also my :-( especially since I live there! You have to see for yourself to really realize the destructive force of the storm and the vastness of the affected areas! A real catastrophe.
Thank you for your sincere emotion, Antonio!

on the vaia disaster I agree but it is necessary to make a clarification these are artificial forests planted by man monospecific and much more subject to these disasters, a forest formed by different species each of which reacts differently to the action of the wind also in function of the development of the radical apparatus.
Leing dead logs to the ground is good to function as a defense against erosion and failure, they help the spontaneous growth of new seedlings by creating a microclimate that helps germinate and grow, their decomposition produces humus. Now a diversified forest is emerging that is much more resilient to climate change and disasters
