FIRENZE: LA LEGGENDA DEL VOLTO PIETRIFICATO La Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore è uno dei più antichi luoghi di culto cittadino, risalente all'VIII secolo. Non tralasciate una visita a questa chiesa dalla semplicissima facciata e dall'interno imponente. Ma soprattutto, cercate la sua torre campanaria mozzata, e alzate lo sguardo: incontrerete quello di un personaggio leggendario, intento a scrutarvi a sua volta: un viso marmoreo spunta inaspettato tra le pietre a vista dell'antica struttura, e nessuno sa con certezza perché sia finito lì. I fiorentini la chiamano 'La Berta', ed è un volto di donna ricco di leggende perdurate nei secoli.? Potrebbe trattarsi della punizione soprannaturale inflitta ad una donna, narra la versione più leggendaria che la fa risalire al 1327, anno in cui Cecco d'Ascoli, scienziato e umanista, fu condannato al rogo per le sue posizioni considerate eretiche dal tribunale dell'Inquisizione. Fu arso in piazza Santa Croce, e avviandosi al patibolo, passando dinanzi alla Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, si dice che il prigioniero implorasse dell'acqua. Proprio a quell'altezza, una donna – qui la versione della storia si sdoppia, e narra di un prete affacciato alle finestre della chiesa – arringò la folla dicendo di non dargli da bere: secondo la credenza popolare, i condannati per stregoneria potevano salvarsi dalle fiamme del rogo se idratati. Quando la donna (o il prete) disse 'Se beve non brucia!' – o qualcosa di simile, Cecco le si rivolse dicendo “E tu di lì il capo non caverai mai”. Fu così che la donna rimase pietrificata all'istante a causa della maledizione lanciatale. Una versione meno 'magica' ma comunque non appurata, è quella secondo cui il viso marmoreo ritrae un'erbivendola che regalò alla chiesa una campana, comprata grazie ai suoi risparmi. Per ringraziarla, i suoi concittadini ne immortalarono il volto sulla torre campanaria oggi mozzata. In verità, è poco probabile che un'erbivendola avesse tanto denaro da poter fare un simile regalo, ma questa è la narrazione più 'felice' de La Berta.
