Haiti occupa la porzione ovest dell'isola di Hispaniola, poco distante da Cuba peraltro, mentre la parte est è occupata grandemente dalla Repubblica Dominicana, più nota ai più come Santo Domingo. Il paese, tra i più poveri del mondo, è noto per aver patito il dramma di uno sconvolgente terremoto in anni recenti, una sorta di maledizione che ha infierito su un luogo già disgraziato per altre ragioni. I villaggi e le pochissime città sono tutte costiere, spesso senza una via di terra che le colleghi. Nella zona estremo nord che ho toccato i giovani, che appalesano tanta voglia di mondo occidentale, mantengono una sorta di timidezza dettata dalla loro condizione, come mi è sembrato di vedere in questo pescatore che osservava il mio gruppetto di visitatori
