Le Nepentacee sono piante carnivore originarie delle zone tropicali e subtropicali con un elevato tasso di umidità e crescono sia in zone aperte, sia nelle radure ai margini di aree boscate e talvolta nelle foreste non troppo fitte, in quanto amano le zone luminose. La trappola è costituita da un ascidio a forma di brocca che si sviluppa all'estremità delle foglie e contiene un liquido che è in grado di digerire le prede cadute all'interno, attratte dalle sostanze zuccherine e dai profumi prodotti dalla pianta stessa. Le parti nutritive della preda vengono poi assorbite da particolari cellule poste sulla superficie interna degli ascidi. Alcune specie hanno degli ascidi particolarmente grandi che contengono circa due litri di liquido e sono capaci di catturare e digerire anche piccoli uccelli o roditori delle dimensioni di un topo.
