Ai tempi del famigerato muro, nella parte ovest vennero allestite delle piattaforme rialzate che permettevano ai turisti (ma anche ai Capi di Stato in visita alla città) di vedere come si svolgeva la vita oltre il muro, a est, con lo scopo politico di un confronto tra le due parti. La piattaforma rialzata al Memoriale del muro di Berlino permette oggi di vedere dall'alto l'unica porzione originale del muro ancora esistente, che comprende in realtà un duplice sbarramento con in mezzo la famigerata "striscia della morte" e la torretta di guardia.
