Pushkar è un luogo sacro dell'induismo fin dai tempi più antichi come attesta il resoconto di viaggio del monaco buddista cinese F?xián che visitò l'India tra il 399 e il 415 d.C. Nel suo libro F?xián cita il santuario di Pushkan riferendo che era un luogo di pellegrinaggio assai frequentato. Secondo la tradizione un fiore di loto cadde dalla mano di Brahma mentre era assorto in meditazione e dai petali del fiore sgorgò l'acqua che diede origine al lago di Pushkar.
