Il Palazzo d'Avalos fu costruito sul punto più alto di Procida, la zona di Terra Murata, fu realizzato, insieme alle mura, nel '500, per volere di quelli che furono i governatori dell'isola fino al '700: la famiglia d'Avalos. Il palazzo fu voluto dal Cardinale Innico d'Avalos e il progetto fu affidato agli architetti Cavagna e Tortelli; inizialmente fu un edificio signorile e, successivamente, Palazzo Reale dei Borbone divenendo sia per Carlo III che, in particolare, per Ferdinando IV, residenza reale per la caccia, prima della realizzazione di Capodimonte e della Reggia di Caserta. Nel 1815, però, gli stessi Borbone lo trasformarono prima in scuola militare e poi in carcere del regno, con successivi ampliamenti, messi in atto dal 1840, fino a tramutarlo in carcere di stato della neonata penisola italiana. Il carcere di Procida che, oltre ad ospitare ergastolani, comprendeva anche un opificio, voluto dai gesuiti, per la lavorazione della canapa da parte dei detenuti, rimase operativo fino al 1985 e “ospitò” personaggi illustri come Cesare Rosaroll e Luigi Settembrini; dopo la caduta della Repubblica di Salò, dal '45 al '50, furono rinchiusi qui tutti i principali capi del regime fascista, da Graziani a Teruzzi, passando per Cassinelli e Junio Valerio Borghese, comandante della X Mas, senza dimenticare Frank Mannino e gli altri esponenti della Banda Giuliano. Tutto ciò fino alla chiusura definitiva nel 1988, in seguito alla quale il carcere fu, per anni, abbandonato completamente al suo destino; nel 2013, finalmente l'edificio e gli spazi adiacenti furono acquistati dal comune, che cominciò i lavori di riqualificazione e messa in sicurezza, per permettere visite guidate a turisti e residenti.
