E' un piccolo borgo di pescatori dominato, dalla parte del mare, dai Faraglioni dei Ciclopi le cui masse laviche nere ed appuntite emergono dalle acque cristalline. Nell'Odissea si narra che questi fossero i massi scagliati da Polifemo contro Ulisse che l'aveva accecato lanciandogli un dardo infuocato nell'unico occhio. L'eroe era poi fuggito con i suoi compagni aggrappato al ventre delle pecore del ciclope. Di fianco si erge l'isola Lachea, oggi sede di una stazione biologica dell'Università di Catania. Il porticciolo, invaso dal sole e punteggiato di barche variopinte tirate in secca, sembra popolato dai fantasmi dei personaggi di Verga, la Maruzza e gli altri Malavoglia, che attendono ansiosi scrutando il mare, nella vana speranza di avvistare la Provvidenza con il suo carico di lupini. Ed è proprio ad Aci Trezza che Luchino Visconti decise di girare La terra trema, rispettando l'ambientazione del romanzo verghiano da cui il film è stato tratto.
