Nel centro storico di Milano, lungo via Torino, a metà strada tra piazza Duomo e le Colonne di San Lorenzo, si apre una piccola piazza, Piazza San Giorgio. La piazzetta è sovrastata dalla chiesa di San Giorgio al Palazzo, sede della rappresentanza milanese del Sacro Militare Ordine Costantiniano di San Giorgio. La struttura è stata edificata sulle vecchie vestigia del palazzo imperiale voluto da Diocleziano, quando Milano – allora Mediolanum – divenne la sede occidentale dell'impero tetrartico, composto da due Cesari e due Augusti. Il primo edifico venne costruito nel 740 per volere del vescovo di Milano San Natale, ma venne poi distrutto. Successivamente, dal XVI secolo e per circa tre secoli, la chiesa subì diversi interventi che ne cambiarono l'aspetto originario. Nel Cinquecento vennero edificate le cappelle laterali e tra queste anche la Cappella della Passione, che venne poi affrescata nel 1516 dall'artista Bernardino Luini. Nel Settecento, più precisamente nel 1774, venne sostituita la vecchia facciata in mattoni con i tre portali rinascimentali e venne realizzata la nuova opera, interamente rivestita in marmo e in stile barocco, su progetto di Francesco Conte. La cima della facciata termina con un timpano triangolare sormontato da tre statue di bronzo che raffigurano, ai lati, due angeli mentre quella centrale rappresenta lo stesso San Giorgio cui è dedicata la chiesa. Nell'Ottocento, infine, Parrocchetti si occupò di realizzare il campanile a pianta quadrata e la cupola neoclassica. Internamente la chiesa fu ristrutturata sempre nell'Ottocento da Luigi Cagnola e si presenta oggi con una pianta a croce latina con tre navate. Diversi sono gli affreschi, presenti soprattutto nelle cappelle laterali: nella prima a destra, per esempio, è visibile una pala di Gaudenzio Ferrari. Infine, come molte altre chiese di Milano, anche questa ha una sua piccola curiosità. All'interno della chiesa di San Giorgio infatti si trovano due lapidi. La prima in ricordo dell'Editto di Milano del 313 attraverso il quale Costantino concesse la libertà di culto ai cristiani, la seconda invece per rievocare il passaggio e la presenza nella chiesa della Congregazione di Cavalieri del Sacro Ordine Militare di San Giorgio. Excellent indoor photo of this interesting church from the Baroque interior.
