Un tronco marcescente giace sul suolo umido del bosco. Su di esso si sono sviluppati i funghi saprofiti. Si possono osservare gli "aethalia", corpi fruttiferi, che solitamente si presentano disseminati in superficie in piccoli gruppi. I fori di uscita degli insetti lignicoli sono ora fori di aerazione e accesso per altri animali che contribuiscono al rapido decomporsi del legno. Le foglie cadute sono di olmo.
