Werk Gschwent di Lavarone, oggi meglio noto come Forte Belvedere, fu progettato dal tenente del Genio ing. Rudolf Schneider e realizzato tra il 1908 e il 1912 poco lontano dall'abitato di Óseli, su uno sperone di roccia calcarea (a quota 1177 m) che sporge a strapiombo sulla Val d'Astico, vallata che all'epoca sanciva il confine di stato fra Regno d'Italia e Austria-Ungheria.. La fortezza è composta da vari blocchi scavati nella montagna: la casamatta principale ? che ospitava alloggiamenti, magazzini, servizi logistici - il blocco batterie in posizione avanzata, un'opera di controscarpa nel fossato e tre avamposti corazzati. Per resistere ai più pesanti bombardamenti fu dotato di una copertura di oltre due metri e mezzo di calcestruzzo nel quale fu inserito un triplo strato di putrelle d'acciaio da 400 mm. Concepito, come le altre fortezze degli Altipiani, per resistere in assoluta autonomia a bombardamenti che potevano durare per giorni e giorni, disponeva di ampi depositi, di un acquedotto munito di potabilizzatore, una centrale elettrica interna, un pronto soccorso per gli eventuali feriti, una centrale telefonica e una stanza di telegrafia ottica per poter comunicare con l'esterno.
