La datazione delle mura risale alla fine del V sec. A.C. sono realizzate con grandi blocchi impostati a secco, lo spessore è di circa tre metri. Il tratto meglio conservato è quello nord, che si estende per una lunghezza di circa 100 mt con un'altezza media di circa 8 mt. Il paese è costruito attorno a un nucleo di epoca protostorica posto ai piedi del promontorio abitato già in epoca preistorica, sulla cui sommità esisteva un megalitico Tempio di Diana molto probabilmente costruito su un impianto fenicio, ipotesi è verosimile a causa dell'esistenza di una cisterna di epoca precedente. I greci chiamarono il villaggio Kefaloidion riprendendo forse il nome aramaico kephas (pietra) affine al fenicio riferibile alla natura del promontorio, un blocco di roccia calcarea. Nel 1063 fu conquistata dai Normanni e nel 1131 inizio la costruzione della celebre cattedrale.
