Questa statua del "Ghibellin fuggiasco", si trova a Verona nella bella piazza Dei Signori. Ammetto che vedere lo sguardo fiero e quasi accusatore dell'autore della Divina Commedia, mette in tutti quelli che, lo conoscono (avendo a lungo studiato, l'uomo, il poeta ed il politico), imbarazzo e quasi un timore reverenziale. Ma ecco, qualche cenno sull'esilio veronese del grande Alighieri. “L'esilio rallargò l'orizzonte di Dante e di fiorentino lo fece cittadino d'Italia” “Tu proverai sí come sa di sale lo pane altrui, e come è duro calle lo scendere e 'l salir per l'altrui scale.” Canto XVII del Paradiso Dante apprese di essere stato condannato all'esilio con l'accusa di <<baratteria, lucri illeciti ed estorsioni inique>> nel 1302. In quel momento non si trovava a Firenze essendo stato inviato a Roma come ambasciatore. Iniziò così il suo girovagare per varie regioni d'Italia dove ricoprì il ruolo di uomo di corte presso signori magnanimi (i Malaspina di Lunigiana, gli Scaligeri di Verona, i Da Camino di Treviso, i Da Polenta di Ravenna) che ospitavano personalità di cultura sia per funzioni ambasciatoriali sia per ricevere in cambio prestigio e lustro. Da fiero intellettuale cittadino del suo libero Comune, dopo la condanna, il poeta si ritrovò a dover assoggettare ad altri la sua volontà e la sua attività creativa. Dopo un tentativo fallimentare di rientro a Firenze, si allontanò definitivamente dalla Toscana rifugiandosi alla corte degli Scaligeri di Verona. Scriverà Dante nel XVII Canto del Paradiso: “Lo primo tuo refugio, il primo ostello/sarà la cortesia del gran Lombardo/che'n su la scala porta il santo uccello.” Il gran Lombardo è Bartolomeo della Scala, l'uccello è l'aquila simbolo degli Scaligeri.
