In Calabria meta privilegiata degli escursionisti e' Montalto(1956 s.l.m), la vetta piu' alta dell'Aspromonte. Il fascino dell'escursione a Montalto e' arricchito dalla presenza, sulla sua sommita', del bronzo della statua del Redentore e da quello della Rosa dei Venti. Il sentiero si snoda prevalentemente in salita, immerso tra faggete e abetaie, e offre all'escursionista scorci panoramici unici al mondo. Con un solo sguardo, infatti, si possono osservare i fumi di tre vulcani: Etna, Vulcano e Stromboli. Per celebrare l'Anno Santo 1900 nacque l'idea di realizzare venti monumenti dedicati al Redentore su altrettante montagne d'Italia e Montalto fu una delle localita' prescelte. La statua del Redentore, che si ergeva su ''una base marmorea alta oltre dieci metri'', con il trascorrere degli anni fu danneggiata dalle intemperie e dal 1937 in poi e' stata ricostruita per ben due volte. Dal 20 agosto 1994, a pochi metri dalla statua del Redentore, vi e' anche una ''rosa dei venti'' in fusione di bronzo sistemata su un monoblocco di pietra di Lazzaro. Strumento di orientamento per gli escursionisti e gli appasionati di montagna, la ''rosa dei venti'' vuole anche essere il simbolo della ricerca, della ragione, della tolleranza e della fratellanza. Montalto, con i suoi panorami, col suo silenzio, con i suoi simboli e' dunque meta privilegiata dagli escursionisti ed importante crocevia per chi percorre a piedi l'Aspromonte
