Nome scientifico: Melitaea athalia (Rottenburg, 1775) Dimensioni: Apertura alare: 34 - 46 mm. Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 16-22. Descrizione della specie: Melitaea athalia è una piccola ninfalide diffusa in tutta Europa e talvolta molto comune, specie nei prati di collina. La specie è molto variabile come disposizione della colorazione, e non è facile distinguerla da specie simili (quali ad esempio Mellicta varia, presente sulle Alpi). È una farfalla di medio-piccole dimensioni, ampiamente diffusa, che presenta nell'ambito del suo areale una spiccata variabilità, a cui si aggiungono sottili differenze tra i due sessi. Molto variabile per taglia e colori. Doppie linee marginali nere tra le lunule marginali bianche e le frange, sulla parte inferiore delle ali posteriori. Parte inferiore delle ali posteriori con la doppia linea marginale nera riempita di bianco o biancastro, dello stesso colore delle lunule marginali adiacenti. Linea discale nera spesso completa e grossa sulla parte superiore di entrambe le ali. Sulla parte superiore macchie nere usualmente complete. Estremità dei palpi nera da sotto fino alla fine. Lunule submarginali nere nello spazio 2 molto prominenti sulla parte inferiore delle ali anteriori. Parte superiore macchiata di nero spesso leggermente irregolare e grossa. Rovescio: ali anteriori di colore arancio con apice e bordo giallognoli e disegno maculare nero ridotto. Posteriori arancio con fasce basale e postdiscale divise dalle nervature in diversi spazi ovali bianco giallognoli. Lunule submarginali delle stesso colore. Stadi giovanili: le uova sono deposte in gruppi sulla parte inferiore della foglia. Il bruco si nutre e vive in siti di seta. Le crisalidi sono attaccate alla pianta o poste vicino al terreno. Piante nutrici del bruco: Plantago spp., Veronica spp., Melampyrum spp., Digitalis spp. Distribuzione e habitat: tutta Italia, esclusa la Sardegna. frequenta prati e radure dalla bassa alla media montagna, fino a 2200 m.
