M57 è una nebulosa planetaria che dista su per giù 2000 anni luce da noi.
La sua dimensione apparente è molto piccola, è un oggetto di dimensioni inferiori a 4 primi d'arco. La dimensione fisica reale è circa 2.5 anni luce
Pertanto anche fotografando a 2.5 metri di focale rimane molto piccolo.
Nonostante appaia piccola la parte centrale della nebulosa è discretamente luminosa, magnitudine apparente circa 9.8. è pertanto appena visibile con un grosso binocolo (20x100 ad esempio) o con piccoli telescopi.
Però bisogna ingrandire parecchio l'immagine per poter notare qualche dettaglio in visuale, pertanto per una osservazione decente della parte centrale della nebulosa servono comunque grandi telescopi.
La stella nana centrale è quel che rimane dello scoppio della stella che ha originato la nebulosa ed è piuttosto debole, circa magnitudine 16 quindi praticamente non osservabile in visuale nemmeno con telescopi amatoriali
Normalmente si vedono fotografie che rappresentano la parte centrale della nebulosa.
In realtà andando in profondità con le esposizioni (nel mio caso circa 26 ore in Halpha) è possibile mettere in risalto anche gli anelli esterni della nebulosa che sono debolissimi
Per farvi capire quanto ho fatto una piccola misura approssimativa, se assegnamo come riferimento un valore di luminosità 1 alla area esterna, ossia a un quadretto di anello più esterno, i rapporti di luce tra i vari anelli in scala lineare sono
outer ring —> 1 (reference)
mid ring —> 4 (4 volte più brillante)
out near part —> 8 (8 volte più)
inner part —> 86 (86 volte più brillante)
max of inner —>2700 (2700 più brillante)
Cioè la parte di nebulosa che comunemente osserviamo/fotografiamo è circa 2500-3000 volte più luminosa dell'anello più esterno che ho registrato. Ovviamente questo rapporto non è visualizzabile a monitor 
Non so se l'ultimo anello presente nella mia foto sia veramente il più esterno di questa nebulosa, ma è veramente già al limite della mia strumentazione
Nella immagine a sinistra c'è una galassia, sovrapposta solo prospetticamente
L'immagine che vi ho presentato è un forte crop del piccolo campo inquadrato dalla mia camera CCD, proprio perché la planetaria è veramente piccina
