[EDIT] La cattedrale di Elgin venne saccheggiata nel 1567, dopo che la riforma della chiesa scozzese portata avanti da John Knox sancì il distacco da Roma. Negli anni successivi al 1630 le pietre dell'edificio vennero utilizzate per costruire abitazioni ed altri edifici, come successo anche alla cattedrale di St. Andrews. Dell'imponente edificio che fu, chiamato la Lanterna del Nord oggi rimangono soltanto suggestive rovine. Varcando il portone in pietra è possibile camminare in quella che un tempo era la navata centrale, calpestando un manto d'erba che nei secoli ha sostituito l'antico pavimento.
