Il nome di lui, Javed. Il nome di lei, invece, Kakoli. Suo padre morì quando aveva 12 anni, sua madre quando ne aveva 20 e da allora ha sempre vissuto per strada con le sue sorelle. Attualmente il suo unico modo per guadagnarsi da vivere è quello di andare per le strade, in mezzo al traffico, per mendicare. I transgenders, comunemente chiamati hijras qui in Bangladesh, affrontano senza sosta sensazioni contrastanti e conflitti emotivi molto intensi. Abbracciano una parte marginale della società; emarginati anche dalle proprie famiglie, hanno accesso limitato all'istruzione, ai servizi sanitari, agli spazi pubblici ed alla vita sociale e culturale, trovandosi, così, ad affrontare difficoltà legali, sociali ed economiche. Molestie, violenze, negazioni e maltrattamenti li privano ogni giorno dei diritti civili fondamentali. La Corte Suprema ha recentemente pronunciato una sentenza che riconosce il terzo genere come un'identità sessuale né maschile né femminile; ma nonostante la legge Kakoli, come il resto degli hijras, continua a nascondersi dietro il velo, in quel lato dell'oscurità.
