Quando il capriolo entra nel periodo della riproduzione in luglio-agosto, il maschio subisce una vera e propria metamorfosi comportamentale. Perde totalmente quegli atteggiamenti diffidenti e la proverbiale timidezza e si dedica esclusivamente alla caccia di femmine o di potenziali intrusi dello stesso sesso che invadono inavvertitamente il suo territorio. In questi frangenti, quando è colto dall'estro riproduttivo, il capriolo insegue con pervicacia la femmina per tentare l'accoppiamento e perde qualsiasi forma di prudenza. In questa immagine la corsa è stata interrotta dalla presenza di un altro competitore. Quindi prende il sopravvento la combattività e la situazione si inverte. La femmina viene momentaneamente abbandonata e l'interesse si concentra tutto sul rivale.
