Il paese di Casoli si torva per la prima volta citato in un documento del X secolo. l'origine del paese vecchio che sovrasta il tortuoso e suggestivo torrente Lombricese, si deve alla presenza della via di Lombardia che lo attraversava, spesso citata nelle cronache del XIV secolo, utile raccordo tra la Versilia e la Garfagnana per il trasporto di olio nelle località emiliane e lombarde. Casoli fu protagonista negli scontri di confine che si verificarono agli inizi del cinquecento.
