Scansione da diapositiva (velvia 50) del mio primo viaggio a Churchill nel 2004.- Tardo pomeriggio; avevo vagabondato l'intera giornata nella tundra alla ricerca di orsi, lepri artiche, pernici bianche ed altro, con una temperatura attorno ai -20°.- Ero a Churchill da due settimane; avevo già fotografato le volpi artiche più o meno in tutte le salse e da giorni accarezzavo l'idea di fotografarne una acciambellata nella neve. L'ho vista; ho fermato il fuoristrada a circa venticinque metri di distanza ed ho fatto alcuni scatti col 500 mm dal finestrino; poi sono sceso ed ho iniziato un lentissimo avvicinamento.- Quando sollevava allarmata la testa, mi fermavo ed aspettavo pazientemente che si tranquillizzasse, tornando a mettersi nella posizione iniziale.- Nuovo avvicinamento; nuovo sollevamento della testa; nuovo paziente stop.- Ho ripetuto più volte l'operazione fino ad arrivare alla distanza minima di messa a fuoco del 500 mm, scattando diverse immagini.- Stava scendendo la sera, era nuvoloso ed anche se luce ce n'era ancora abbastanza, c'era un ultravioletto spaventoso; percepibile anche visivamente.- Ho deciso di ritornare lentamente al fuoristrada; ho montato l'80-200 mm ed il flash intenzionalmente starato in negativo di oltre uno stop (non doveva servire ad illuminare, ma solo a correggere la temperatura colore della luce – all'epoca si chiamava così il bilanciamento del bianco).- Nello stesso modo di prima, con estrema pazienza, mi sono riavvicinato, arrivando alla minima distanza di messa a fuoco dell'obiettivo (1,80 metri) e mi sono completamente steso nella neve davanti a lei, alla sua stessa altezza.- Col freddo della giornata le batterie del flash mi stavano abbandonando; sono comunque riuscito a realizzare alcuni scatti, dovendo aspettare “un'eternità” fra uno e l'altro affinchè si ricaricasse; immobile, steso a meno di due metri da lei che mi osservava dal folto della coda.- Poi il flash non ce l'ha più fatta; lentamente sono tornato al fuoristrada e me ne sono andato lasciandola così, esattamente come l'avevo trovata.-

I started hearing about Churchill (and dream to go there) in the mid-80s .- Thanks to a friend who does for a living what we do as a hobby, I was able to realize this dream for the first time in 2003; experience photo-naturalistic indimenticabile.- There are then returned in 2013 finding a situation much more "commercial" and exploited, but Churchill living in my own way; no pre-packaged or prepared situations, but going alone to look for animals and situations; thanks to the fact that I know those luoghi.- I'm thinking of doing, always out there, experience a bit 'more extreme the coming winter; but everything is still under embrionale.-
