La Chiesa di San Babila è probabilmente, la prima chiesa cattolica di Milano. Sorge sulle rovine di una chiesa precedente risalente alla fine dell'XI secolo, costruita su una più antica basilica del secolo V fondata da San Lorenzo, prima col titolo "Ad concilia Sanctorum", e ancora prima presumibilmente un tempio pagano dedicato al Sole. La basilica di San Babila sorge nel XI secolo ed ha subito nel corso degli anni vari rimaneggiamenti in quanto più volte danneggiata nel corso dei secoli. L'interno della basilica è costituito da tre navate divise da pilastri a fascio nelle quali è possibile ammirare tracce di antichi affreschi. I dipinti delle absidi laterali e il mosaico di quella centrale sono di Luigi Cavenaghi (1915) e rappresentano diversi santi. L'altare maggiore con le relative statue è di Gaetano Moretti e Ludovico Pogliaghi (1917). Altri lavori furono realizzati in tempi successivi: il battistero d'ispirazione paleocristiana dell'architetto Orombelli (1937) e la nuova cappella dell'Addolorata sulla navata a sinistra, ricostruita dall'architetto Ambrogio Annoni in sostituzione di quella distrutta dai bombardamenti. Nella navata destra si trova un'immagine della Madonna, che risale al Seicento ed è molto venerata. La Chiesa di San Babila è un punto nevralgico del centro storico milanese, alla confluenza di Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Corso Europa, Corso Monforte e Corso Venezia. Se da Piazza San Babila si percorre la strada pedonale di corso Vittorio Emanuele II, si arriva direttamente in Piazza Duomo, mentre percorrendo corso Matteotti si giunge a Palazzo Marino, sede del Comune di Milano, e alla Scala. Da piazza San Babila si può inoltre imboccare via Montenapoleone, la famosa via dello shopping milanese. Critiche, commenti e consigli sempre super gradite. Grazie.
