Burgos dista circa 244 Km da Madrid, nella comunità autonoma di Castilla. Fu fondata dal conte castigliano Diego Rodriguez "Porcelos" nell'884. Alfonso III, nel tentativo di frenare l'avanzata saracena, ordinò al conte di fondare un borgo cintato di mura sulla sponda dell'Arlanzon. L'origine della città è, pertanto, militare. Burgos, popolata per mandato reale e sottomessa direttamente all'autorità dei re di Léon fino al 930, si trasformò in capitale del contado di Castiglia quando ottenne l'indipendenza dal regno di León con l'aiuto di Fernan Gonzalez. Il 27 gennaio del 1512 furono stilate, le Leggi di Burgos per regolamentare il trattamento dei popoli nativi del Nuovo Mondo, che non era garantito dell'Encomienda. Furono le prime leggi che la Monarchia spagnola applicò per organizzare la conquista del Nuovo Mondo. Uno dei monumenti principali della città di Burgos, è l'Arco di Santa Maria, situata all'ingresso di piazza San Fernando. Concepito come Arco trionfale, fu costruito tra il XIX ed il XV secolo. Sulla facciata spiccano le statue di importanti personaggi della storia spagnola. In alto, campeggia la statua della Vergine Maria, patrona della città. Era la porta più signorile tra tutte quelle che davano accesso alla città di Burgos. Nel XV secolo venne ristrutturata da Juan de Vallejo e da Francisco de Colonia. Ha l'aspetto di un castello con due grandi torri. L'arco di trionfo, costruito in onore dell'imperatore Carlo V, è dominato dall'immagine di Santa Maria la Mayor.
