Il parco nazionale si trova nell'estremità nord-orientale della Germania, in Meclemburgo-Pomerania anteriore. Il punto più famoso del parco sono le celebri scogliere bianche intorno al promontorio del Königsstuhl, già immortalato dal famoso pittore Caspar David Friedrich. Fanno parte della riserva anche le foreste di faggi risalenti al XIII secolo sullo Stubnitzplateau, un altopiano che poggia in gran parte su strati di gesso e che è profondamente segnato dall'ultima era glaciale. La costa bianca, lunga 10 chilometri e alta fino a 117 metri, colpisce per le sue scogliere attive e non, che dimostrano tutta la dinamicità di una costa di questo genere e che sono un simbolo della regione. I visitatori più attenti troveranno sulla spiaggia non solo il gesso ma anche sedimenti e fossili risalenti all'era glaciale.
