Mi trovo nelle miniere di carbone a cielo aperto di Jharia, nello Stato federato del Jharkhand, in India. In questo bacino carbonifero di circa 450 chilometri quadrati, situato nel distretto di Dhanbad, ardono circa 70 incendi sotterranei, presenti ininterrottamente fin dal 1916 e finora impossibili da domare, che nel tempo hanno bruciato e continuano a bruciare decine di milioni di tonnellate di carbone. Qui ogni mattino almeno un centinaio di persone, bambini compresi, lavorano illegalmente, I minatori trasportano sulla testa grossi pezzi di carbone contenuti in ceste di vimini o altri contenitori. Una vita quotidiana dominata da grandi fatiche, trascorsa in mezzo al fuoco dell'autocombustione e al fumo che appesantisce l'aria, con notevoli rischi per la salute. L'incremento vertiginoso dell'inquinamento dovuto all'estrazione selvaggia del carbone ha fatto sì che la popolazione soffra delle più gravi malattie respiratorie dal tumore ai polmoni alla silicosi, dalle più svariate tipologie di tubercolosi alle occlusioni delle vie respiratorie; inoltre si riscontrano malattie del sangue per inalazione di monossido di carbonio, disfunzioni cardiache e una vita media che non supera i 50 anni. In tutta la zona nascono villaggi in prossimità delle miniere di carbone a cielo aperto, con conseguenze devastanti per la popolazione, che vive senza le più basilari infrastrutture igenico-sanitarie, in baraccopoli prive di acqua corrente e di sistema fognario, dove l'aria è irrespirabile per le polveri sottili e per il monossido di carbonio generato dal carbone in combustione, in una situazione dove le infrastrutture locali e statali che dovrebbero garantire un'assistenza sanitaria anche minima sono del tutto insufficienti e inadeguate. #Ritratto #Portrait #Sguardi #BiancoeNero #BlackAndWhite
