La scimmia nasica è un primate endemico del Borneo. La sua caratteristica principale è il "nasone" o proboscide, di dimensioni particolarmente marcate nei maschi adulti. Molto pronunciato è anche il ventre che possiede quattro scomparti ed è munito di una potente flora batterica per digerire le foglie e la frutta di cui si nutre. A causa di queste caratteristiche è anche chiamata "scimmia olandese", come forma di dileggio per gli antichi colonizzatori olandesi che, evidentemente, avevano nasi e pance piuttosto pronunciati. Le nasiche, al pari di molte altre specie del Borneo, sono considerate a rischio di estinzione a causa della rapida e progressive scomparsa del loro habitat costituito da foreste di mangrovie, sostituite da coltivazioni.
